Hundreds of preventable roadside deaths occur every year. Don't wait for a breakdown to realize you're unprepared. Here is what driver should keep in their trunk:

  1. High-Visibility Vest: If you must exit the vehicle, being seen is your #1 priority.

  2. Road Markers: Cones, triangles, or flares help other drivers see your car from a distance and avoid a secondary crash.

  3. Powerful Flashlight: Essential for night repairs or flagging down help.

  4. An "Emergency" Jacket: A flat tire in the rain is miserable. Keep an old one in the trunk.

  5. Instant Tire Sealant: Products like "Fix-a-Flat" can get you to a safe location or a repair shop without you having to change a tire on a dangerous shoulder.

You can find some of these items in a kit.  I purchased this one from Amazon for our two cars.

Pro-Tip: Save your roadside assistance number in your phone now (if you don’t have this service, ask your car insurance agent/company to see if they can add it to your policy). On the freeway, you can also dial 511 for a free tow to a safer location. For immediate danger, always dial 911.
