October is National Teen Driver Safety Month so I wanted to highlight a statistic that shows how dangerous driving is for young people…teens aged 16–19 are 3 times more likely to be in a fatal crash than adults (IIHS), making motor vehicle accidents a leading cause of teen deaths (CDC).

As a parent, it feels ugly to share this type of statistic, but I do personally think it’s important.  Just like we protect our kids from harm as they grow up…driving has to be part of this.  Here are 4 data-proven ways to do this:

  • Limit Peer Passengers: Having just one teen passenger doubles fatal crash risk. Multiple teen passengers jump that risk to 7 times higher (AAA).

  • Set a 9:00 PM Curfew: Nearly 44% of fatal teen crashes happen between 9:00 PM and 6:00 AM (CDC).

  • Enforce Seatbelts: Over 50% of teens killed in crashes were not wearing a seatbelt (NHTSA).

  • Log 50+ Hours of Supervised Practice: Teens with 50+ hours of adult supervision are 50% less likely to crash during their first year solo (AAA).

BE IN CONTROL.  In the end, it’s important to set boundaries as a teen gains driving experience.  Some parents even create a written driving agreement or use a driving monitor phone app to do this…both proven ways to keep teens safer.

We also know that another challenge as a parent of a teen driver is finding affordable car insurance.  If this is the case for you, please call our Bell Gardens office today at (323) 773-4429 or visit www.invisioninsurance.com to have us help you review options.  Data shows 😊that we have various ways that we can help you bring down the rate…such as quoting teen-friendly car insurance companies, looking for special discounts such as the Good Student discount and more.
