The short answer is YES! According to California Vehicle Code 16028, you are legally allowed to provide proof of insurance using your smartphone. While some still recommend keeping a paper backup in your glove compartment, digital cards are often easier to manage—especially if you have multiple vehicles on one policy.

  • Download your insurer's app: This ensures you always have the most up-to-date ID card ready for an officer or in the event of an accident.

  • Set up quick access: Setup passwordless login (e.g. fingerprint or facial recognition) so you aren't fumbling for a password during an emergency.
