Every January brings changes to the road in the form of new laws. Here are the most important updates:

  • E-Bike Safety (AB 289): All electric bikes must now have a red rear reflector or light visible at all times.

  • School Zone Safety (AB 382): Cities now have the authority to drop speed limits to 20 mph in school zones. This is a "slow roll" toward a statewide 20 mph limit by 2031.

  • Red Light Cameras 2.0 (SB 720): Expect to see more cameras at intersections. These issue "civil" tickets—meaning they work like parking tickets. They won’t add points to your license or hike your insurance, but they will still cost you.

  • Parking Ticket Relief (AB 1299): A new compassionate law allows local governments to waive or reduce penalties for individuals who can prove they are financially unable to pay.

  • Fresh IDs (SB 506): Moved recently? You can now officially request a duplicate driver’s license that reflects your new address immediately.
