California SR-22’s are often misunderstood. Here is all you need to know:
What is it? - An SR-22 is a confirmation or filing that an insurance company makes to the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) that proves that a driver is complying with the the minimum car insurance requirements in California.
Who needs it? - It is usually required from California drivers that are arrested for driving under the influence or if someone is involved in an accident without insurance. Sometimes the DMV will also require it from drivers that get too many moving violations in a short amount of time.
How do I get it? - To get the California SR-22, all you have to do is let your insurance agent or company know to add it to your auto insurance policy. It’s that simple.
How much is the SR-22? - It’s not too expensive…usually $15-25 every renewal.
What if I am required to get it but I don’t? - DMV will tell you how long you need the SR-22 (often 2 years but sometimes longer). If you don’t have the SR-22 during this entire time, they will suspend your driver license.
