Many of us have physical photo albums and old VHS tapes tucked away in boxes. These are prized possessions, but what about the memories on your phone?

A recent life event left my wife and me scrambling to gather digital photos and videos scattered across different devices. We realized some were never backed up and were lost forever. To prevent this, we created a simple three-step plan:

  1. Automatic Backup: There are many options to automatically back up photos and videos on your phone such as OneDrive and iCloud. We decided ourselves to use Google Photos.

  2. Create a Physical Backup: Every 6 months or so, we backup all of our uploaded photos.  With Google Photos, we are able to use Google Takeout to easily download everything onto an external hard drive.

  3. Transfer Video Tapes:  Your old videos will not last forever so it’s important to transfer them now.  Many retailers such as CVS or Walgreens offer this service.

Take a few minutes today to secure your digital memories—your future self and family will thank you!
